Houses have seen some very drastic changes over the years, from design and architecture to how people use them. It’s no surprise that as we as a society have moved forward and modernized every aspect of our lives; our homes mirror this change.

Social relationships, technology, culture and the economy would be considered the driving factors for the evolution of our homes. Smart homes were made entirely possible only due to improvements and understanding of technology, and have changed the way we interact with our homes.

The concept of a home is practically the same as it was centuries ago, however the features of the home that come under the concept have molded as time passed. Let’s take a look at some of the features that have evolved home design.

The Bathroom

This is one aspect of a home that has seen some major changes as time passed. It initially starting out as straight wooden planks with a hole, placed outside of the house. This evolved to copper chamber pots that were placed under the bed, and now we have separate rooms with a “flush” toilet system.

The amenities of the bathroom that people now consider a norm were once luxury items only reserved for those who could afford it. Sanitary advances and changes in the class system all helped evolve toilets from sheds in the backyard to a designated room.

Greener Houses

As the population has seen exponential growth over the years, the urban density also required a revision of home design. In the past, a house would typically feature windows that would not offer much of a view and rather serve a ventilation purpose. Today we see houses that are more in tune with nature, seamlessly merging into the environment around them.

Larger windows, huge balconies and see-through panels that open into luscious gardens are a few examples of this change. Environmentally friendly housing has also seen rapid growth, promoting the use of natural lights and insulation around the house.Greener Houses

The “Great” Room

Another change that developed mainly due to urban density is the concept of the “great” room. Previously, rooms were intended for a single purpose. The trend nowadays is to have an open-concept house which entails fewer walls and a single large space that is used for multiple purposes.

The kitchen and the living room being merged into one is a good example of this, where people can show off their fancy kitchen and combine entertainment and food into one activity.
