Typically, real estate agents enjoy working with people. They are usually in high spirits and are rearing to help you. However, client’s need to make sure they don’t unintentionally cross a line and push their agents away.

Here are a few simple rules for homebuyers when working with real estate agents:

Know that Agents Work on Commission

The majority of real estate agents work on commission. If a deal doesn’t pull through, they don’t get paid. They have no other option than to do a good job for you. Just because they haven’t called you for a couple of days, doesn’t mean they aren’t working hard to get you a great deal.

There’s no need to bombard them with calls for no reason. Also, don’t hire them unless you’re sure that you want their services until you close a deal.

Arrive to Your Appointments on Time

Time is money in all industries but it’s especially true in the real estate business. If you’re constantly cancelling on your real estate agent, you could be costing them clients and a whole lot of cash.

Don’t make appointments with them unless you know for sure that you can make them. If you happen to be running late, let them know. Think of them as partners rather than someone who works for you.

Understand Open House Protocol

Understand Open House Protocol

Don’t assume it’s alright for you to attend open houses on your own. If you’re unable to visit an open house at the same time as your agent, let them know in advance so they can reschedule.

If they say that it’s alright for you to go to an open house on your own then hand their business card to the hosting agent. Sharing their business card lets the hosting agent know that you are protected.

Don’t ask the selling agent too many questions – that’s your real estate agent’s job.

Don’t Sign Forms You Don’t Understand

Real estate forms can be complicated. They contain industry specific terminology that you may not understand. Whenever you’re asked to sign forms during a real estate transactions, ask your agent to explain the form to you.

Do not put your signature on anything you don’t understand.

Be transparent with your real estate agent; if you’re unsure about something, let them know. Your satisfaction is important to them.
