Many new homes built today draw inspiration and details from the past and mix them with modern features. However, in some cases, there are still houses with unbalanced combinations of old and modern features that collectively make for outdated aesthetics.

What was once considered as crucial in homes is now considered tacky and irrelevant. Let’s take a look at some of these features that you probably shouldn’t have in your home anymore.

Dark Wood Paneling

Dark wood paneling was extremely popular back in the 1960’s and 70’s. In fact, it was so popular that coming across a house without dark wood was extremely rare.

However, the dark and dreary features have now been replaced in favor of neutral or brightly painted drywall. If your house is still showcasing dark wood panels it’s clear that remodeling hasn’t been done in decades.

Popcorn Ceilings

These textured ceilings were everywhere in the mid 20th century, and provided a challenge for anyone attempting to clean them. While many people found them worthwhile during the time, you can rest assured that no one wants to keep up with them anymore. Apart from lacking visual beauty, they’re also hard to paint and removing them is a messy and expensive process.

If you wish to sell your house, investing in removing them would definitely appeal to potential buyers.

Built-in Media Cabinets

While a decade ago these cabinets were all the rage, things aren’t the same anymore. Today flat screen TV’s are larger and slimmer and can be hung straight onto walls. Media cabinets were a place to store the old “box” television sets along with DVD players and CDs. But with entertainment appliances becoming smaller, thinner and more advanced, you no longer need that additional space or a dedicated cabinet for your entertainment system.Built-in Media Cabinets

Tile Counters

Tiles counters went obsolete more than a decade ago. Once popular in the 70’s, tile counters now are a clear sign that you need to remodel. Not only are they visually unappealing, they’re also very tough to clean, and this means your counters are better off without them. Make it a rule of thumb to only use tiles as backsplashes in kitchens and bathrooms.
